My friend Trina and I were up and on the trail at 5:30 this morning. We biked 10 miles in the cool breeze and sporadic rains (especially in the last 3 miles) and talked a lot about our upcoming goals: races, weight loss, hiking. Toward the end of the ride, I turned to Trina and said, “You know what really strikes fear into my heart? Surgery. Getting opened up. A friend of the family died of a heart attack when he was 46 [my age], and another friend we went to high school with is in the CCU right now with 100% blockage. I don’t want that to be me. It’s not anger, frustration, or even disappointment that’s motivating me right now. It is pure fear.”
It’s not hard for me to visualize something like that happening, and every time I run that little movie in my head, it helps me tremendously in making good decisions.
Yesterday, I was looking for foods that would be good for my heart, and it didn’t take me long to find this site on webmd.com. They list the top 25 foods they consider to be heart-healthy.
Take a good long look at this list. How many items do you eat on a daily or weekly basis? How many foods you are currently eating can easily be switched with some of these better choices?
Here’s the list. Feel free to chime in on other heart-healthy choices you’ve discovered.
- Salmon
- Flaxseed (ground)
- Oatmeal
- Black or Kidney Beans
- Almonds
- Walnuts
- Red Wine
- Tuna
- Tofu
- Brown Rice
- Soy Milk
- Blueberries
- Carrots
- Spinach
- Broccoli
- Sweet Potato
- Red Bell Peppers
- Asparagus
- Oranges
- Tomatoes
- Acorn Squash
- Cantaloupe
- Papaya
- Dark Chocolate
- Tea
I love all of these foods, and so this switch won’t be hard at all for me to make. If you’re looking to make the change, too, how hard will it be to work these foods into your diet?
